    Success Story

    Ebony, Indiana
Telamon opens many doors for Head Start mom.

Telamon Indiana 005Ebony’s story is one of transformation – from chaos to serenity.  When she first came into TRC’s Head Start program, she was struggling with many things, from emotional issues to recreational drug use. She was generally overwhelmed by the challenges of having a very young child with a serious medical condition. Ebony lacked stable housing, transportation, money, parenting skills and her daughter had very few skills.  Eventually, Ebony obtained transitional housing and learned of Head Start.  When Mia entered TRC’s Head Start program, their journey began.  The compassionate, nonjudgmental support and encouragement offered by TRC staff helped turn her life around.  While medical professionals expected that Mia would learn slower than other children because of her brain trauma, once enrolled and exposed to Head Start’s techniques, she began learning just like the other children. During the course of her time in the program, Ebony continued to develop coping and self-help skills, with an active support team. This went a long way and Ebony began feeling that she was part of a big family within Head Start.

Ebony has taken steps to get her debt paid off so that she can return to college.  She plans to pursue a degree in the human services or social work field because of all of the help she received through Head Start.  With encouragement from Head Start staff, she has begun volunteering in her community. Because of her volunteer and networking efforts, she has gained several new support people for her life and future job possibilities.
